Strengthening Trade Union Capacities on Climate Change and Inclusive Just Transition for Egypt, Morocco Tunisia

Active and meaningful participation of trade unions on climate change and just transition at national, sectoral and workplace level has gained wide momentum over the years and remains critical in building forward better. The course, which was developed with a comprehensive multi-disciplinary approach aimed at strengthening the capacity of trade unions in Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia to address different aspects of climate change, green and decent jobs and just transition relevant to the needs of the workers and trade unions. The training course equiped participants with the knowledge and skills they need to deal with the profound challenges that climate change is bringing in the world of work, promote green and decent jobs and a gender-inclusive just transition and green recovery. The course assisted the trade unions to develop action plans for their effective and meaningful engagement in national policy, sectoral and workplace level, as well as better equiping them for subsequent Conference of Parties (CoPs). OBJECTIVES This training aimed at strengthening and supporting participants with the knowledge and skills they need to deal with the profound challenges that climate change is bringing in the world of work, promote green and decent jobs and a gender-inclusive just transition and green recovery. Specifically, the training aimed at enabling participants to: i. Use International Labour Standards, ILO tools and other instruments to engage, advocate and formulate key demands for inclusive green economy, green jobs and a gender-inclusive just transition; ii. Develop trade union strategies in the context of emerging climate change challenges, workers’ realities, green and decent work and future of work; iii. Articulate entry points for trade union mobilizing, advocacy and engagement based on the ongoing government, ILO, other UN agencies and multilateral development institutions green initiatives; iv. Share, learn from and, replicate successful national and sectoral trade union collective bargaining initiatives on green initiatives and a just transition; v. Develop priority trade union actions and strategies on effective and meaningful green initiatives and gender-inclusive just transition especially for workers in vulnerable situations including women, migrants, youths and, workers with disabilities; and, vi. Develop and strengthen a green and just transition network knowledgeable on the inclusive green initiatives and just transition. CONTENT The course covered the following topical areas: (i) the International Labour Organisation (ILO)’s instruments and policy guidelines and, other international and regional frameworks to promote green and decent jobs and inclusive just transition; (ii) decent work as a cornerstone for effective policies to green economies for achieving sustainable development; (iii) macroeconomic and industrial policies, technology and financing issues related to climate change and just transition; (iv) skills development for a just transition and green and decent jobs; and (v) social dialogue as a vehicle to promote and progressively achieve green and decent jobs and gender-inclusive just transition.
