Training of trainers on the Essentials in Occupational Safety and Health in the Caribbean

This training of trainers (ToT) on Essentials in Occupational Safety and Health (EOSH) has empowered the employers and business members’ organisations (EBMOs) in the Caribbean to set up and deliver an innovative training service on EOSH. The ToT is built on the new EOSH training package that offers a flexible and multi-tool approach cutting across several OSH issues applicable to different sectors of activities and different audiences. The programme trained participants on the technical content of the 29 modules of the EOSH package and on how to run an effective training service, both online and face-to-face. The EOSH programme was organized with the support of the ILO Regional Office for the Americas and the Bureau for Employers’ Activities (ACT/EMP). OBJECTIVES The objectives of the ToT was to support EBMOs in the Caribbean region in setting up an innovative training service on EOSH. Through the activity, participants have: • Consolidated and strengthened their technical knowledge on the 29 training modules of the ITCILO training package; • Learned how to set up and run an effective training service on EOSH; • Experimented different techniques and channels to promote the EOSH training offer; • Explored different methodologies for online and face-to-face training delivery; • Created their EOSH course via the online configurator on the ITCILO eCampus; • Customized and personalized their course page; CONTENT The course covered two main parts. In the first one, participants explored in depth general concepts of OSH, as well as specific risks and themes through the modules below: • Introduction to safety and health at work • Management of prevention • Risk assessment • Accident Prevention and Reporting • Motivating Workers: Leadership and supervision • Work permits • Personal Protective Equipment • Safety and Health signalization • Emergency responses • Internal emergency plan • Ergonomics • Hazardous substances • Special works • Health and safety committees • Fire and explosions • Confined spaces • Tools, machines and appliance • Hoist, lift and bear • Trip, slip and fall • Work at height • Electricity • Radiation • Asbestos • Noise and vibrations • Drugs and alcohol awareness • Harassment and violence at work • Muscle skeletal disorders • Safe and healthy workplaces for Young Workers • Managing health crises and COVID-19 In the second part, participants learned: • How to set up a new EOSH training service; • Create online courses; • Training and facilitation methodologies; • How to effectively prepare and deliver training sessions on EOSH. ACHIEVEMENT Participants have: • Acquired technical knowledge on the EOSH package; • Learned how to set up, manage and run an effective training service on EOSH; • Strengthened key skills and competencies to deliver engaging training sessions, both online and face-to-face.
