Train the Trainers Course for Strengthening Dispute Resolution Mechanisms in Ethiopia

This course was designed with the aim to train future trainers with the knowledge and skills necessary for developing effective training activities oriented to build capacity to manage dispute prevention and resolution in Ethiopia. The course was delivered in English from 15 to 17 June 2022. It lasted three days and foresaw an overall time involvement of approximately 20 hours. In addition to the sessions, participants were given access to a dedicated e-platform on the E-Campus, the e-learning portal of the ITCILO. On this e-platform, participants could find readings and other resources related to the course sessions. It included theoretical explanations complemented by individual reflection activities, plenary discussions, group works and other activities highly interactive. The learning was interactive and facilitated by trainers. It included theoretical explanations complemented by role-plays, plenary discussions, group works and other interactive activities. OBJECTIVES This course aimed to: • Strengthen Ethiopia’s labour dispute resolution system; • Develop further knowledge on mechanisms that can support the effective prevention of labour disputes; • Reinforce the theoretical and practical knowledge of the key principles of the conciliation and mediation processes; • Gain further experience on techniques and guidance on how to improve the skills and the techniques to be used during these processes by the neutral third party; • Provide participants with the skills necessary to plan and deliver training activities oriented to build capacity on dispute prevention and dispute managing mechanisms. • Promote the application of key ILO principles and values in this context. CONTENT The sessions given during the sessions included the following topics: • The Conflict Dynamic; • Approaches to Conflict Management; • Outcomes of negotiation • Positional bargaining vs. Needs based bargaining • Main elements of Conciliation / Mediation • Practicing what we learnt • The Conciliation/Mediation Process • Process Management Skills • Problem Management Skills / • People Management Skills • Learning management cycle • Bloom’s taxonomy • Working with adult learners/ • Facilitation methods • Preparing a training plan ACHIEVEMENT At the end of the course, participants were able to: • To describe and identify the key elements and principles of the conciliation / mediation process; • To identify and comprehend the development of conflict, disputes as well as the different approaches to conflict management and how to apply them; • To illustrate and apply the theory of negotiation, implement and expand the array of negotiation skills while polishing the existing ones; • To outline, explain and put into practice the key skills a conciliator / mediator needs in order to manage and master the process of conciliation / mediation;
