Certification Programme on Value Chain Development: Moving from Analysis into Action

Salam Jabakhanji

The ILO Value Chain Analyst Certification Programme enhances participants’ capacity to analyze value chains, identify systemic constraints in market systems and design impactful interventions for more and better jobs. OBJECTIVES By the end of the training programme, participants are able to: • Identify high-growth value chains with potential for decent jobs; • Analyze a specific value chain and identify systemic constraints to small enterprise growth and decent job creation; • Design pilot interventions, using business modelling, based on a vision of how value chains and markets should work; • Facilitate value chain analysis in their country CONTENT The course used an action-oriented, participative approach, based on practical examples from market systems development projects in the field. Emphasis was placed on how the value chain and facilitative approach can contribute to changing the business practices of private sector companies, to create large-scale, lasting benefits for poor people. The course covers five main stages of the VCD process: sector selection, market system analysis, intervention design, sustainable business models and results measurement.
