Mitigating Artificial Intelligence Bias in the Workplace and Human Resources Practices

Juliane Rodrigues Mota Mendes

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping Human Resources-revolutionizing how organizations recruit, assess, and engage talent. From automating repetitive tasks to enabling data-driven decisions, AI promises faster, smarter, and more efficient HR practices. Yet, alongside these benefits comes a significant challenge: AI systems can unintentionally replicate and even amplify existing biases and inequalities, often in ways that are harder to detect than human discrimination. Whether it stems from skewed training data, opaque algorithms, or systemic inequalities, the result can be unintended-but deeply harmful-discrimination in hiring, promotion, and beyond. This four-week online training equips HR professionals, policymakers, and other key actors with the knowledge and tools to harness AI responsibly.

OBJECTIVES

  • Understand and explain the role of AI and algorithmic decision-making in various HR functions, including recruitment, performance evaluation, and talent management.

  • Assess the value and limitations of AI applications across the employee lifecycle, while recognizing associated ethical considerations.

  • Identify and critically analyze different types of bias in AI systems using real-world and HR-specific examples.

  • Navigate relevant legal, policy, and self-regulatory frameworks that address AI-related discrimination in the workplace.

  • Apply practical strategies to audit, monitor, and improve AI tools to ensure fairness, inclusivity, and transparency in HR practices.
