The fisheries sector produces one of the world’s most valued sources of food, yet fishers’ working and living conditions are particularly challenging. The course equipped participants with the knowledge, skills and tools to promote and ensure decent working conditions on board fishing vessels.
OBJECTIVES
• Understand the international instruments regulating work in fishing.
• Learn how to prepare and conduct inspection of working and living conditions on board fishing vessels.
• Acquire knowledge of tools and techniques to identify and remedy non-conformities, as well as to promote decent working and living conditions in fishing.
CONTENT
• The international regulatory framework: overview of the fishing industry; inspection and enforcement challenges; the Work in Fishing Convention, 2007 (No. 188) with focus on definitions, scope of application and competent authorities; other international instruments and tools.
• What is to be inspected and actions to remedy deficiencies: roles and responsibilities; valid documents; crew list; fisher’s work agreement; determination of the employment or working relationships on board fishing vessels; manning; hours of rest; medical examination and certificates; occupational safety and health, accident prevention and risk assessment; protection in case of work-related sickness, injury or death; food and potable water; accommodation; medical care; payment of fishers; minimum age for employment; recruitment and placement of fishers; repatriation; complaint mechanisms.
• Tools and techniques for securing decent living and working conditions on board fishing vessels.
