Employment and Decent Work for Peace and Resilience

This Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) explores ILO Recommendation 205 on Employment and Decent Work for Peace and Resilience (2017), the only international normative framework providing guidance for addressing world-of-work issues in response to crisis situations including pandemics, armed conflict, natural disaster, environmental degradation, and forced displacement. The course provides participants with information and practical knowledge about policies, approaches, tools, methodologies and case studies for the promotion of employment and decent work in fragile, conflict and disaster settings. These can help support crisis prevention, recovery, and the construction of sustainable peace and resilience. OBJECTIVES By having gained knowledge on a wide array of policies, methods and tools to promote decent work and employment in situations of fragility, conflict and disaster, participants have: • Discussed labour market challenges and opportunities available to foster employment in fragile settings; • Identified how each ILO policy area can contribute to the promotion of jobs for peace and resilience; • Envisioned feasible and sustainable strategies to build lasting peace and resilience through the promotion of employment and decent work; and • Explored potential partnerships to promote jobs for peace and resilience CONTENT Learning Block 1: An Overview of Recommendation no. 205 Participants explored the definition of fragility, its vicious cycle, and the factors that contribute to making a situation fragile. They further examined the ILO Jobs for Peace and Resilience flagship programme and at the ILO's role in the Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus. Participants also focused on the Theory of Change underpinning ILO efforts in the promotion of employment programmes for peace. Learning Block 2: An In-Depth Look at Recommendation no. 205 Participants have broadened their knowledge of employment and decent work approaches and measures for crisis prevention and response presented in Recommendation 205 across a number of ILO policy areas. Learning Block 3: Recommendation no. 205 in Action Participants explored the promotion of knowledge sharing and awareness raising on Recommendation 205 at the country level. This was achieved through the review of key good practices and case studies. NUMBER OF WEEKS: 4 weeks, 5 learning hours a week
