


Capacity-Building Workshop for Prospects Countries: Promoting Decent Work Through Pro-Employment and Nature-based Solutions

The world is witnessing the highest levels of displacement ever recorded. In recent years, forced displacement has increased not only in scale but also in complexity. While forcibly displaced persons face specific vulnerabilities, host communities also struggle to pursue their own development efforts in an environment that has been transformed by these large movements of people.
ILO though the PROSPECTS project is committed to support communities through innovative and local resource initiatives such as Nature-based Solutions (NbS). NbS offer an opportunity to create immediate "no harm" jobs for local communities, while at the same time supporting a transition to a greener and job-rich economy. Currently, 75 million people are employed by NbS worldwide and it is estimated that 20 million new jobs can be generated by 2030, including youth and women. In order to achieve these goals, however, such initiatives must be anchored on a pro-employment and green economic policies and deliberate job creation strategies to ensure just transition to a climate-neutral economy that guarantees better and decent jobs, social protection and more training opportunities.
OBJECTIVES
The course will contribute to:
Provide an introduction the importance of climate change and biodiversity loss and its impact on the world of work and livelihoods, especially how it will affect youth.
Introduce EIIP and green works approach and Highlight its employment potential.
Highlight the need for climate, biodiversity and employment actions through Nature-based Solutions: definition, implementation modalities, monitoring.
Reflect on local NbS actions that may be suitable for the context of the target countries.
Knowledge sharing and exchange opportunities on locally led practices from other organizations in the selected locations.
Lay the groundwork for integrating decent job creation through NbS in the four target countries.
Discuss with donor governments and other international organizations potential way forward to scale-up these solutions.
CONTENT
The training programme will include the following information:
The world of work and climate change, land degradation and biodiversity loss.
Employment Intensive approaches to NbS and in particular land restoration: Local Resource Based approached, Green Works and green Public Employment Programmes.
Nature-based solutions, global and local perspective.
The importance of the inclusion of indigenous communities and local communities, youth and women in restoration.
Environmental and social safeguards and trade-offs.
Decent work in NbS by sectors.
Tools and guidelines to implement NbS.
