TRAINING OF ONLINE TRAINERS FOR TRADE UNIONS IN ASIA AND THE PACIFIC

In February and March 2021, ILO ACTRAV, with trade union representatives from Asia Pacific analysed institutional challenges, knowledge gaps, and missing competencies and identified several areas for skills and capacity development. Based on the results, ILO-ACTRAV organized the delivery of five training programmes for trade union functionaries in 2021 and 2022. The topics were: Digital Communication for Trade Unions; Social Development and Advocacy; Trade and Decent Work; Social Dialogue for Solutions; and Economics at Work: Trade Unions Building Forward Better. This was coordinated, developed and implemented in cooperation with common sense -eLearning & training consultants GmbH and the International Training Center of the ILO. The goal is for trade unions in the Asia Pacific region to be equipped with knowledge and digital skills and ready to the post-COVID-19 and future of work challenges. In alignment with the concept of sustainable capacity building, training institutions shall have the capacity to develop digital training formats and use these courses for their unions themselves in the future. OBJECTIVES The course aimed to enable trainers of trade union training institution to implement the five previous ILO courses and other online courses independently as online facilitators using digital tools and resources. It also aimed to capacitate the participants to create their organizational implementation plan and co-create facilitation guidelines for the five online training themes Specifically, by the end of the course, participants were expected to be able to: o assess and select different eLearning formats o understand and apply online facilitation elements and tools o plan, design and implement online facilitation elements like webinars o co-create a facilitator guide for one of the five previous ILO courses. CONTENT The course consisted of three (3) inter-connected components: Two week Online Training Phase, which covered (a) Basics of eLearning, (b) Creating an enabling environment for eLearning, (c) Online communication, (d) Digital tools for synchronous and asynchronous learning, and (e) Webinars and web meetings. Two-week Independent Learning Phase where participants prepared and completed specific tasks for the face-to-face training to gain in-depth knowledge of online training designs. Participants worked in groups to prepare facilitator guides for online training. Three-day Face-to-Face Training where participants put everything they have learned into practice. It included experts’ presentations, group work, exchange, planning and finalizing of the facilitator guides. It covered (a) Online moderation and facilitation (advanced skills), (b) Review of online moderation and facilitation scenarios, and (c) Presentation and finalization of facilitators guide for online training.
