E-learning on the labour dimensions of climate change and human mobility

The course was intended to analyse the complex intersection of climate change and mobility, specifically the impacts on labour mobility, on decent work and employment, labour markets and just transitions towards environmentally sustainable economies with a south-south approach. It explored the potential of rights-based labour mobility as an adaptive strategy in response to climate change, and considers concrete strategies for effective labour market integration of people displaced due to disasters, environmental degradation and climate change.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course, participants have:

  • Explored the dynamics and the complex interactions between climate change and human mobility, including the gender dimensions, through the lens of south-south cooperation

  • Analysed the impacts, and the range of potential outcomes, of climate-induced human mobility on employment and labour market access for affected people and the implications for decent work

  • Reviewed the scope of the ILO’s Just Transition Guidelines in relation to human mobility

  • Established the importance of resilience, sustainability and adaptation strategies, notably green jobs and skills, to mitigate the impacts of climate change

  • Recognised the significance of ensuring that climate-related mobility and employment strategies and policies are governed through a rights-based approach based on international labour standards that recognises human dignity and minimises protection gaps.
