Management of Occupational Safety and Health for Ethiopian Companies

Occupational hazards can be managed in the enterprises and the occurrence of occupational accidents and diseases can be prevented. Occupational safety and health (OSH) is a discipline that deals with these issues. The preventive management approach requires companies to adopt a preventive organization and conducting management actions for the anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of occupational hazards that may endanger the health and welfare of workers. The focus of OSH management in companies is an issue that should be planned from a national policy and articulated through laws and regulations on OSH as well as promoted through other institutional OSH actions such as training and information. The International Labour Office (ILO) in cooperation with International Training Center (ITC), organized this course, addressed to OSH officers of partners companies of the ILO Project “Advancing decent work collectively in Ethiopia’s textile industry” on their main roles and duties of their profession and the main OSH management practices. ILO intended to disseminate its international experience and facilitate knowledge sharing and discussion of selected successful strategies on OSH management. OBJECTIVES The general objective of the course was to strengthening the capacity of selected textile companies in the management of the OSH and in the compliance with the OSH Laws and Regulations. At the end of the course, participants were able to: • Describe the principles and guidelines of the ILO, as well as international good practices relating to OSH management in enterprises. • Describe the main principles and fundamentals of OSH and their main roles and duties OSH officers. • Analyze activities, functions and OSH measures adopted by the company to propose measures for improvement. • Transfer knowledge on OSH management in a company.
