KNOW ABOUT BUSINESS - TRAINERS' REFRESHER AND CERTIFICATION PROGRAMME
Erandika Dissanayake
Over the past years, the project “South Asia Leadership in Entrepreneurship” (SALE – Sri Lanka) made important strides to enhance the capacity of business trainers in Sri Lanka. A network of trainers was created with the capacity to offer both the ILO Start Your Business (SYB) and Know About Business (KAB) methodologies, through localized approaches. A group of 62 trainers received face-to-face training on the effective delivery of
business training for (aspiring) small entrepreneurs. They have access to the ITCILO e-campus pages with the self-guided modules on Start and Improve Your Business and Know About Business, which they are actively using in their training deliveries.
In order to ensure the sustainability of the abovementioned efforts and formalize the competencies that business trainers developed over the past years, there was a need for a certification programme for Know About Business Trainers. This certification programme, delivered on-line, was meant to build on the existing capacities, ensure that the KAB methodology is delivered in line with international best practice and contribute to the
creation of an effective trainers’ network in the country.
OBJECTIVES
• Deliver the Know About Business curriculum and adapt it for different contexts and audiences
• Engage the participants in Know About Business training in a series of games and exercises that allow them to develop their practical entrepreneurship skills
• Provide guidance to participants in Know About Business Training on the preparation of a simple business plan
• Promote the KAB programme independently and work towards the scaling up of the programme to new districts, schools and audiences
CONTENT
The Training was delivered fully on-line over a period of four weeks. The programme included a combination of self-guided learning, assignments and participation in webinars. The self-guided learning was largely based on the existing KAB on-line modules, but also included other readings and assignments. The webinars combined trainer-led sessions on the different aspects of KAB delivery with microteaching sessions in which the candidate trainers were asked to deliver certain KAB content pieces to a group of participants.
