Occupational Safety, Health and Environment as a Fundamental Right

Almoatasem Bellah Nasouh Abed Khader

The Regional Workers’ Academy on the Occupational Safety, Health and Environment as a Fundamental Right contributed to the reinforcement of the role of workers’ organizations in the Arab States in promoting and supporting the ratification of the two ILO fundamental Conventions on OSH: the Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 1981 (No. 155) and the Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 2006 (No. 187) and their effective implementation at the national level. It equally contributed to an increased understanding of the implications of the inclusion of a safe and healthy working environment in the ILO’s framework of fundamental principles and rights at work for trade unions’ agendas. The Academy was implemented in parallel to the Global Workers' Academy on OSH with joint and separate sessions. The Academy consisted of four thematic live webinars, self-guided modules, tutor-guided learning and assignments on the E-campus, the ITCILO online platform. The estimated time for the completion of the Academy was 4 days of training. OBJECTIVES At the end of the Academy participants were able to: • Promote and support the ratification of C155 and C187 and their effective implementation • Actively engage in the national design and implementation of comprehensive OSH policies and guidelines • Ensure an inclusive approach to OSH at the trade union level and advocate for an inclusive approach to OSH at the national level • Apply good safety and health practices on in global supply chains, where applicable • Promote the adoption of environmental management and greener practices that contribute to the elimination or reduction of OSH hazards to workers and their communities CONTENT The Academy consisted of 4 complementary modules: Module 1.
