Standard Course on Conciliation / Mediation for Albania

This course was designed with the aim to provide participants with sound theoretical knowledge and skills on the key topics related to conciliation/mediation of labour disputes. The course was delivered in English with simultaneous interpretation in Albanian, from 19 to 22 April 2022. It lasted four days and foresaw an overall time involvement of approximately 30 hours. In addition to the sessions, participants were given access to a dedicated e-platform on the E-Campus, the e-learning portal of the ITCILO. On this e-platform, participants could find readings and other resources related to the course sessions. The learning was interactive and facilitated by trainers. It included theoretical explanations complemented by role-plays, plenary discussions, group works and other interactive activities. OBJECTIVES This course aimed to: • To Strengthen Albania’s dispute resolution system; • To increase the use of conciliation/mediation for amicable settlement of labour disputes and foster the creation of social peace; • To contribute to an increased recognition of the role and functions of conciliators and mediators. • To provide techniques and guidance on how to improve the skills of conciliators / mediators; • To promote the application of key ILO principles and values in this context. CONTENT The sessions given during the sessions included the following topics: • Introduction to Relevant International Labour Standards; • Introduction to conciliation / mediation • The conflict dynamic • Labour Disputes in Albania: The National Legislative Framework • Process management skills • Problem management skills • Effective people skills • Labour Disputes in Albania: Practical Exercises • The Conciliation/Mediation Process: A Practical Experience ACHIEVEMENT At the end of the course, participants were able to: • To describe and identify the key elements and principles of the conciliation / mediation process; • To identify and comprehend the development of conflict, disputes as well as the different approaches to conflict management and how to apply them; • To illustrate and apply the theory of negotiation, implement and expand the array of negotiation skills while polishing the existing ones; • To outline, explain and put into practice the key skills a conciliator / mediator needs in order to manage and master the process of conciliation / mediation.
