Sustainable public procurement for home-grown school feeding

30 November - 4 December 2020 CONTENT This course provided participants with a logical and consistent framework for understanding the key concepts of local food purchases for school meals programs. Participants were introduced to the main planning steps and policy options to design initiatives of public food procurement from smallholder farmers for school meals. They acquire competencies on seven key implementation domains: sustainable procurement, preferential procurement regimes, food baskets and menus, agricultural and smallholders’ capacity development, value chain development, food safety and quality standard and impact assessment. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon the successful completion of the training programme, participants should be able to understand the rationale of sustainable public food procurement and the available good practices, tools and knowledge basis presented along the course to inform country policy dialogue and technical decisions for the design and implementation of sustainable public food procurement for school meals. COURSE STRUCTURE The course was composed of: Three self-guided modules on: - Home-grown school feeding - Sustainable public procurement for home-grown school feeding - Strengthening food systems and value chains for home-grown school feeding Seven webinars on: - From school feeding to home-grown school feeding - Different operating models for home-grown school feeding - Addressing barriers to entry – public procurement markets - Food systems and value chain development - Impact assessment for evidence-based policy, sustainability and scaling up - Working with farmers’ associations - Country experiences
