Young Leaders Boot Camp

The Young Leaders Boot Camp equips participants with the tools to kick-start their career in the United Nations System and other International Organizations (IOs). Over the course of two weeks, participants join an international faculty of experts on the ITCILO Turin Campus, honing the core competencies expected of officers seeking to leave a lasting, positive impact in the contexts in which they operate. OBJECTIVES By the end of the course, participants will have: - Applied mediation and negotiation techniques to the resolution of a real UN case study; - Developed leadership skills for the effective pursuit of a career in multilateral diplomacy and decision-making across the UN system and in other IOs; - Designed an international career in support of the values and mission of UN agencies and other IOs; - Strengthened their team-building skills for the effective delivery of projects and programmes across the UN system and other IOs; - Entered a network of young, aspiring international civil servants pursuing a career in multilateral diplomacy and decision-making. CONTENT The Young Leaders Boot Camp is structured around six modular, thematic blocks which run over the course of 2 weeks (24 July – 4 August 2023). These are structured as outlined below: Thematic Block 1: Navigating the UN Syste Which opportunities and challenges lie ahead of aspiring international civil servants driving transformational change? Thematic Block 1 sessions focused on the mission, values and structure of the UN system. Thematic Block 2: Leadership Skills for International Civil Servants How has the concept of “leadership” evolved in the multilateral sphere? Across Thematic Block 2 sessions, participants unpacked how leadership is exercised across the UN system at all levels. They analysed the multilateral leadership paradigm and the shift it is currently undergoing. They also considered how to leverage this shift for the pursuit of a career in the UN system. Thematic Block 3: Mediation, Third-Party Exploratory Processes and Negotiations How do UN leaders employ negotiation, mediation or facilitation tools for the resolution of challenges threatening to weaken the UN system? With the guidance of mediation and negotiation specialists, participants joined in and ran simulation games on real-life UN scenarios. Thematic Block 4: Career Design Sessions How do you want to contribute to the world? What drives you and gives you purpose? During Thematic Block 5 sessions, participants have found purpose, direction and perspective in the design of an impactful career in the UN system and other international organizations. Thematic Block 5: Leadership Expert Fireside Chats Thematic Block 5 sessions welcomed both senior and mid-career officers from the UN to the Young Leaders Boot Camp. The “fireside chat” format of these sessions allowed room for open, candid conversation around what the day-to-day job of personnel working for the UN entail. Thematic Block 6: Outdoor Team-Building Activities By taking part in Thematic Block 7 activities, participants unleashed the power of play to hone their communication, problem-solving, team-work and leadership skills. These activities have taken place in the heart of Turin, giving participants a taste of what the heart of Piedmont has to offer. NUMBER OF WEEKS: 2 weeks
