Home-grown School Feeding

School meals programmes have been consistently proving to advance education, health and nutrition outcomes of school children. Moreover, incorporating preferential procurement from smallholder farmers can support local food production and economy. Many governments are increasingly sourcing food for school meals from smallholder farmers with the aim to boost local agriculture, strengthen local food systems, create synergies with nutrition, and move people out of poverty. FAO and ILO have set up a new training, focusing on local governments’ needs to implement public food procurements for home-grown school feeding. Therefore, this training was addressed to officials and experts from local governments and municipalities, accountable for food procurement, school feeding, health, social protection and agriculture development. OBJECTIVES The objective of the workshop is to help local governments design, implement and develop strategies for sustainable public food procurement from smallholder farmers for school meals. CONTENT The course covered the following content : • Sustainable public procurement for school feeding programmes in urban areas; • Operating model Sustainable procurement for home-grown school feeding; • Sustainable procurement for home-grown school feeding; • Addressing barriers to entry to public procurement markets; • Mitigating the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on food and nutrition of schoolchildren; • Strengthening food systems and food value chains.
