The Global Governance and Innovation Talents Camp is a cluster of training sessions organized and implemented by the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization (ITCILO) within the framework of "The 5th Xi'An Jiaotong University (XJTU) Global Governance and Innovation Talents Camp", run by the XJTU Employment and Entrepreneurship Guidance Service Center.
This tailor-made course supports students from XJTU and other Xi'An universities majoring in international studies and foreign languages in their ambition toward becoming outstanding international civil servants and global governance professionals.
As one of the first universities to open in China, Xi’An Jiaotong University was supported by the Central Government through the 7th and 8th Five-Year Plans, China's “Project 211”, and “Project 985” to develop into a world-class university. Today, XJTU is on the List of World-Class Universities and First-Class Disciplines (abbreviated as “Double First-Class”) released in
2017 by the Ministry of Education of China.
The XJTU Employment and Entrepreneurship Guidance Service Center of Xi’An Jiaotong University is a department under the leadership of the Career Guidance Committee, which implements the employment policy of national college students, exercises the function of student employment service, guidance, education and management, and provides high-quality services for recruitment. The Center is committed to offering good services to graduates to handle employment formalities, including career planning, career skills, career decision-making in different industries and in start-up businesses.
The ITCILO is dedicated to the delivery of high quality, relevant and effective training in support of decent work and sustainable development; a mandate rooted in Sustainable Development Goal 8: “Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all”.
OBJECTIVES
The Global Governance Talents Camp equipped participants with core conceptual and practical tools for the pursuit of a career in international organizations.
Specifically, it enabled participants to:
• Acquire an in-depth understanding of the 2030 Agenda SDGs and the roles young professionals can play in supporting their achievement within international organizations;
• Hone skills essential to the pursuit of a career in international organizations.
CONTENT
The Global Governance Talents Camp covered the following topics:
• Workshop: Introduction to UN Job Categories and Mock UN Job Application.
In this session, participants explored available UN job categories, also receiving guidance on how to shape their CVs and cover letters to highlight their achievements.
• Workshop: Mock UN Interviews
In this session, participants were divided into groups to explore how UN interviews are run for the selection of entry-level personnel. The session concluded with a collective reflection of how the experience went - both for interviewees and the interviewers.
• Workshop: Mind-Mapping a UN Programme
In this session, participants continue working in groups to map existing UN programmes, identifying areas to which they can contribute first-hand.
ACHIEVEMENT
With the completion of this course, participants have acquired:
• Soft skills to envision, design and pursue a career as international civil servants;
• Fundamental competency-based skills to apply to vacancies opening across international organizations;
• Mapping skills for the identification of relevant entry points within already existing UN programmes.
