Training of Trainers (ToT) on E-Learning and Digital Communication in East Africa

The Training of Trainers (ToT) is a comprehensive multi-disciplinary training package designed by the Workers’ Activities Programme of the International Training Centre of the ILO to address the growing demand for workers’ organisations to harness the rapid technological changes and augument their education strategies. The ToT aimed at building and strengthening the capacity of trade union educators in East Africa to effectively deliver transformative online and blended courses for trade union members.
OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of the course, participants are able to:
i. Apply digital and e-learning skills for delivery of online teaching and learning for members;
ii. Design, deliver, monitor and evaluate an online or blended course in particular, determining relevant topics, time, forms, methods, materials, exercises and evaluation using existing digital technologies and e-learning platforms and softwares;
iii. Reconstruct and convert traditional face-to-face learning courses and modules into online training programmes;
iv. Be more creative and capable of producing innovative and effective e-learning programmes;
v. Apply guidelines for online participants’ orientation, encouragement and, dealing with anticipated obstacles related with e-learning methodologies.
CONTENT
Course covered six (6) online learning modules and one week face-to-face learning
Module 1: Digital technology and communication tools and, gender mainstreaming in eLearning;
Module 2: E-learning platforms and softwares and key features, including synchronous and asynchronous tools.
Module 3. The impact of digital platforms on workers’ education: opportunities and obstacles.
Module 4. Spoilt for choice: choosing useful and relevant applications for workers’ education.
Module 5. Constructing online course curriculum for trade union development.
Module 6. Practical: designing, setting up and promoting online courses in trade unions.
The ToT combined asynchronous and synchronous learning sessions in a complementary way. Each week introduced a different module through webinars, self-guided, tutor-led learning, assignments, and research, peer-to-peer exchanges of good practices and experiences, feedback and multimedia content and application of learning on the e-campus.
ECAMPUS AND OTHER LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS (LMSS)
The ToT was delivered via the eCampus, the education platform of the International Training Centre of the ILO. Complimentary learning platforms used included the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS), WhatsApp, Zoom application, and a variety of Google Learning Applications.
ACHIEVEMENT
The certificate of participation is awarded upon completion of a significant part of the course requirements: i) participation in the webinars; ii) completion of self-guided eLearning modules; iii) interaction with co-learners and the online facilitators and tutors; iv) visualization of multimedia content; v) submission of written assignments and weekly posts to the eCampus. The estimated time for the completion of the Course was approximately 60 hours.
