Market Systems Development for Decent Work

The Training of Trainers on Market Systems Development for Decent Work seeks to develop the participant’s knowledge of the Market Systems Development approach, as well as their capacity to train local government officials on how to use the MSD methodology to create more and better jobs in Sri Lanka. OBJECTIVES During the training, participants: • Learned how to identify high-growth value chains with the potential to create decent jobs • Acquired the tools to analyse a specific value chain and identify systemic constraints to small enterprise growth and decent job creation • Designed pilot interventions, using business modelling, based on a vision of how value chains and markets should work • Learned the difference between direct delivery of enterprise development interventions and market system facilitation • Developed their capacity to deliver training on market systems development to national stakeholders, in particular to government officials in Sri Lanka CONTENT The course used a participatory, action-oriented approach based on practical examples of market systems development projects in the field. The focus was on how the value chain and facilitative approach can help change the business practices of private sector firms to create sustainable, large-scale benefits for the poor. The course covers the five main steps in market systems development: sector selection, market system analysis, intervention design, sustainable business models, and results measurement.
