Empowering Communities through Value Chain Development

This training course is designed to introduce World Food Programme participants to the key areas of Value Chain Development, and provide them with the tools to be able to conduct value chain analysis using a systemic approach. OBJECTIVES • Understand the relationship between resilient food systems and efficient value chains • Reflect on the potential of using value chain development to bridge the humanitarian-development nexus • Learn how to identify high-growth value chains with the potential to create decent jobs • Acquire the tools to analyse a specific value chain and identify systemic constraints to agricultural development • Develop their capacity to design programmes with the objective of strengthening local food systems, using a value chain approach • Design pilot interventions, using business modelling, based on a vision of how value chains and markets should work • Learn the difference between direct delivery of enterprise development interventions and market system facilitation • Use value chain development to unlock local procurement opportunities • Learn how to apply value chain development tools in situations afflicted by conflict, thin markets, and aid dependency. CONTENT The training course provided practical and action-oriented sessions on the different aspects of value chain development. The course analysed the principles and rationale of value chain development, provide a detailed review of the different phases of value chain development, shared different market system facilitation techniques and discussed the benefits of market system facilitation.
