Certificate Training for Trade Union Paralegals in the RMG Sector

The capacity development training activities were implemented in collaboration with the Promoting Social Dialogue and Harmonious Industrial Relations (SDIR) in the Bangladesh RMG industry Project of the ILO Country Office in Bangladesh, the Center for Advanced Legal Studies of the University of Dhaka, the Workers’ Resource Centre (WRC), the National Coordination Committee on Workers’ Education (NCCWE), and the IndustriALL Bangladesh Council IBC), with support from the Governments of Denmark and Sweden. OBJECTIVES The capacity development programme aimed to build and strengthen the knowledge, skills and competencies of selected trade union leaders to provide paralegal support and assistance to workers through the Workers’ Resrouce Centre. A paralegal service is a strategic approach aimed at providing accessible, effective and efficient paralegal advisory, representation, and support services to workers towards equitable solutions to work-related complaints and grievances without resorting to litigious and expensive legal processes. TRAINING COURSES A3712300 Certificate Training for Trade Union Paralegals in the RMG Sector 7-11, 14-18 July 2019 | Dhaka, Bangladesh A3512302 Case-Handling, Monitoring, and Reporting of Labour Cases in the RMG Sector 04-06 November 2019 | Dhaka, Bangladesh A3714235 Updates Training and Refresher Course for Trade Union Paralegals: Labour Law and Proper Application in Paralegal Case Handling 02-03 March 2021 ACHIEVEMENTS 1. completed the three required training courses (above) of over 95 learning hours or 15 training days; 2. undertook three (3) months of paralegal internship, which further harnessed application of knowledge, skills, and competencies in case handling; 3. completed and submitted the paralegal internship programme requirement of a minimum of five (5) thoroughly documented labour cases; 4. achieved a level of competency and institutionalized the delivery paralegal service to union members in the RMG sector using tools and resources for documentation and reporting; 5. submitted and continue to update a paralegal service work plan in cooperation with parent labour federation; 6. under the supervision of parent federation, demonstrated a sustained delivery of paralegal service as indicated by the regular submission of reports and participation in coordination meetings; and 7. undertook and passed the final knowledge and competency assessment and certification for trade union paralegals.
